Killing for 'Mother' Kali

It was at most a fringe practice, but a spate of ritual killings in India shows that human sacrifice lives on
BY ALEX PERRY ATAPUR

PRASHANT PANJIAR/LIVEWIRE IMAGES FOR TIME
A goat is sacrificed to the goddess Tara. Most rituals no longer require live sacrifices

For the magic to work, the killing had to be done just right. If the goddess were to grant Khudu Karmakar the awesome powers he expected from a virgin's death, the victim had to be willing, had to know what was happening, watch the knife, and not stop it. But even tranquilizers couldn't lull 15-year-old Manju Kumari to her fate. In his police confession, Karmakar says his wife, daughter and three accomplices had to gag Manju and pin her down on the earthen floor before the shrine. In ritual order, Karmakar wafted incense over her, tore off her blue skirt and pink T shirt, shaved her, sprinkled her with holy water from the Ganges and rubbed her with cooking fat. Then chanting mantras to the "mother" goddess Kali, he sawed off Manju's hands, breasts and left foot, placing the body parts in front of a photograph of a blood-soaked Kali idol. Police say the arcs of blood on the walls suggest Manju bled to death in minutes.

Human sacrifice has always been an anomaly in India. Even 200 years ago, when a boy was killed every day at a Kali temple in Calcutta, blood cults were at odds with a benign Hindu spiritualism that celebrates abstinence and vegetarianism. But Kali is different. A ferocious slayer of evil in Hindu mythology, the goddess is said to have an insatiable appetite for blood. With the law on killing people more strictly enforced today, ersatz substitutes now stand in for humans when sacrifice is required. Most Kali temples have settled on large pumpkins to represent a human body; other followers slit the throats of two-meter-tall human effigies made of flour, or of animals such as goats.

In secret ceremonies, however, the grizzly practice lives on. Quite simply, say the faithful—known as tantrics—Kali looks after those who look after her, bringing riches to the poor, revenge to the oppressed and newborn joy to the childless. So far this year, police have recorded at least one case of ritual killing a month. In January, in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, a 24-year-old woman hacked her three-year-old son to death after a tantric sorcerer supposedly promised unlimited earthly riches. In February, two men in the eastern state of Tripura beheaded a woman on the instructions of a deity they said appeared in their dreams promising hidden treasures. Karmakar killed Manju in Atapur village in Jharkhand state in April. The following month, police dug up the remains of two sisters, aged 18 and 13, in Bihar, dismembered with a ceremonial sword and offered to Kali by their father. Last week on the outskirts of Bombay, maize seller Anil Lakshmikant Singh, 33, beheaded his neighbor's nine-year-old son to save his marriage on the advice of a tantric. Said Singh: "He promised that a human sacrifice would end all my miseries."

Far from ancient barbarisms that refuse to die, sacrifice and sorcery are making a comeback. Sociologists explain the millions who now throng the two main Kali centers in eastern India, at Kamakhya and Tarapith, as what happens when the rat race that is India's future meets the superstitions of its past. Sociologist Ashis Nandy says: "You see your neighbor doing well, above his caste and position, and someone tells you to get a child and do a secret ritual and you can catch up." Adds mysticism expert Ipsita Roy Chakaraverti: "It's got nothing to do with real mysticism or with spiritualism. It comes down to pure and simple greed." Tarapith in particular is a giant building site of new hotels, restaurants and stalls selling plastic swords and postcards of Kali's severed feet. Judging by the visitors here, Kali appeals to both rich and poor: the rows of SUVs parked outside four-star hotels belong to the ranks of businessmen and politicians lining up with their goats behind penniless pilgrims. ("The blood never dries at Tarapith," whispers one villager.)

There are no human sacrifices at the temple these days. But the mystique of ritual killing is so powerful that even those who actually don't perform it claim to do so. In their camp in the cremation grounds beside the temple, a throng of tantrics tout for business by competing to be as spooky as possible, lining their mud-walled temples with human skulls and telling tall tales of human sacrifice. "I cut off her head," says 64-year-old Baba Swami Vivekanand of a girl he says he raised from birth. "We buried the body and brought the head back, cooked it and ate it." He pauses to demand a $2 donation. "Good story, no?" While most of this is innocent, some followers, like Karmakar, are inevitably emboldened to take their quest for power to the extreme. Karmakar, like many others, was caught. But in the dust-bowl villages of India, where superstition reigns and blood has a dark authority, the question is how many other "holy men" have found that ultimate power still rests in the murderous magic of a virgin sacrifice.

Indian temple revives 'human sacrifice'
Wednesday, 3 April, 2002, 11:46 GMT 12:46 UK

Followers of a Hindu cult in India's north-eastern state of Assam have revived the ancient practice of human sacrifice.
But in the absence of human volunteers, devotees at the Kamakhya Temple near the state capital Guwahati are using six-foot effigies made of flour for the rite.

Steeped in secrecy, human sacrifices to the Mother Goddess Shakti were thought to have died out completely.
The revival of the "Nara bali" practice a few years ago would have remained under wraps had it not been for an academic researching the temple, one of India's holiest pilgrimage sites.
The cult followers had apparently wanted live humans to revive the gory tradition, but opted for an effigy instead fearing a backlash.

Ancient worship

"A willing human being is difficult to find these days," said Dr Pradeep Sharmah, director of the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture (VKIC).
He said priests had already been heavily criticised by animal rights groups for their use of animals in ritual sacrifices, hence their decision to use human effigies instead of the real thing.

Dr Sharmah was inducted into the inner circle of a handful of "Shakta" priests after he won their trust.
"The sacrifice is made at midnight, on the day of Ashtami during the 10-day autumnal Durga Puja," said Dr Sharmah.
But it can also be carried out on any day specified by divine forces.
"The ancient worshippers believed that the person to be sacrificed was sent by god, and as a rule a woman would never be put to the altar," Dr Sharmah said.

The Kamakhya Temple attracts some 10,000 devotees per day, but certain aspects of the temple's ceremonies - including sacrifices - have been kept closely-guarded secrets.

No witnesses

The administrator of the Kamakhya Trust, Bharati Prasad Sarma, said that no outsiders were ever allowed to witness a sacrifice.
The administrator said the schoolboy son of a temple priest, or panda, fell blind last year when he tried secretly to watch a ceremony.
The pandas say that only a chosen few are eligible to conduct a sacrifice.
Research shows that human sacrifice at Kamakhya was first revived 75 years ago, but was discontinued a few years later.

A 1933 journal of the Assam Research Society says that living people were sacrificed until the reign of King Gaurinath Singha between 1780 and 1796.
Records of earlier periods at the Department of Historical and Antiquarian Studies indicate that the practice was widespread in Assam.

'I was forced to kill my baby'
Tuesday, 2 April, 2002, 10:00 GMT 11:00 UK

Last September a boy's torso was found in the Thames. Police now believe it could have been a "muti" killing, a human sacrifice practiced in southern Africa. Here, as seen in a BBC Two documentary, a mother reflects how she was forced to help kill her own child.
Helen Madide, of the Thohoyandou area in South Africa, was 18-years-old when she became a social pariah.
She was the mother of a toddler named Fulufhuwani and was separated from his father, Naledzani Mabuda, a traditional healer known as a sangoma.

While the couple tried to sort out their differences, Helen returned to her parents' village. Baby Fulufhuwani regularly went to stay with his father and grandmother.
While most of the 70,000 sangomas in South Africa provide herbal remedies for minor ailments, some crave more potent ingredients to practice muti, the Zulu word for medicine.

"He began to tell me stories. His ancestors said that he must kill me and the child so that he can be rich," Helen told Nobody's Child, a BBC documentary on the investigation into the London boy's death.
"He showed me the path and forced me to go along that path. He was pushing me and demanding me to go whether I like it or not. He said he was going to kill the baby first while I see the baby, then secondly he will kill me."

Although Helen tried to escape, Mabuda caught her and forced her to hold Fulufhuwani's legs while he cut the child's throat.
"When the child was dead, he started to cut all those pieces, the hands, the legs and even the sex organs," Helen says.
Limbs from children, primarily the sexual organs, are said to be the most potent. These are sometimes taken from live victims because their screams are thought to enhance the power of the medicines.
Mabuda then locked Helen up with the child's body. But his relatives, fearing for his wife and child, called the police.

Although her husband was sentenced to life in prison, Helen was acquitted. Six years after her child's death, Helen is trying to get into university to study human sciences.
She has been accepted at a number of universities but the offer is always withdrawn when they realise she is that Helen Madide. One university refused to provide her with accommodation because they feared she might be a danger to local children.

Butchered innocence

Conservative estimates are that at least 300 people have been murdered for their body parts in the past decade in South Africa.
And Dr Anthony Minnar, of the Institute for Human Rights and Criminal Justice in South Africa, fears the toll could be much higher.
We have children going missing every week from our townships," he says. "The assumption is that those missing children are being put into prostitution and also that they are being used for muti murder."

One of the few who lived to tell the tales was Jeffery Mkhonto, who four years ago when he was 12 was mutilated by an organised gang sent to harvest body parts.
Jeffery was called over to the house of a neighbour for some food. Instead the man cut off his genitals with a butcher's knife.
"They took me home and left me in front of my father's house. As they left I heard them say they are going to sell my parts so that they can get money."

But the police have found it difficult to investigate because in such cases, no-one is prepared to come forward.
Similarly in London, little progress has been made on identifying the torso of the boy which was found in the Thames last September - or his killers. Whether or not he was indeed the UK's first recorded victim of a muti killing, the Metropolitan Police are convinced it was ritualistic.

Among the South African experts advising them is Colonel Jonker, who has retired from that country's Occult Crime Unit.
He says: "If there's a guy operating in London, he's going to need body parts again."

Councillor's wife killed 'for being a witch'

September 12 2002 at 02:44PM

A councillor's wife and granddaughter were shot dead by a gunman at Dondolo reserve near Empangeni on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast on Wednesday night, said police.
Captain Musa Khaba said on Thursday that police believed the killing may have been linked to allegations that the wife was practising witchcraft.
The family was about to go to bed when the gunman kicked open the door of councillor Zikitele Isaac Nyawo's home and opened fire about 8.30pm. His wife Melitan Majola, 57, and their granddaughter Lihle Ntimbela, 6, died at the scene.
The councillor was hit in both legs and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Khaba said the allegations of witchcraft first surfaced after the mutilated body of 6-year-old Thembeka Sabela was found on August 27.
The victim's lips, ears and tongue were missing.

Members of the community subsequently assaulted a man accused of the murder. The man claimed he had been ordered to carry out the killing by Majola, who was allegedly practising witchcraft.
The man is expected to appear in the Eshowe magistrate's court later on Thursday.
No arrests have been made in connection with Wednesday night's attack. - Sapa

Iranian beheads daughter thinking she was raped

An Iranian man cut off his seven- year-old daughter's head after suspecting she had been raped by her uncle, the Jomhuri-ye Eslami newspaper said on Sunday.
However, a postmortem showed the girl was still a virgin.

"The motive behind the killing was to defend my honour, fame, and dignity," the paper quoted the father as saying.

Rape often goes unreported in Iran where the conservative society sees it as bringing shame on the victim and family.
Local people have called for the man, who has been arrested, to be hanged but under Iran's Islamic law only the father of the victim has the right to demand the death sentence.
The paper said the father, named as Khazir, has three wives.

Seven-year-old boy sacrificed to goddess Kali
Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

Friday
October 4, 2002

A seven-year-old boy, Sitakanta Behera, was sacrificed on the night of October 1 apparently to appease goddess Kali, police said on Friday.
Behera was kidnapped from his house, in Ranjagola village in Dhenkanal district, on the night of September 29 while he was asleep.

His father Pramod Behera lodged a complaint at local Balimi police station after which a police team led by district Deputy Superintendent of Police Banamali Mishra searched for the kidnappers.
The police picked Arta Sahu (23) from Ranjagola village, who confessed to kidnapping and sacrificing Sitakanta before goddess Kali in a temple located in a nearby forest in the same district.

Sahu said he had a dream that he would die if he did not sacrifice the boy to the deity.
When the police team raided the temple, they discovered severed body parts from different pits around the temple.
"We have arrested Sahu and registered a murder case against him under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code," a district police official told rediff.com.

Mahesh Pandey
BBC correspondent in Bhopal

Mexican Archeologists Find Rare Sacrifice

Saturday July 23, 2005 2:16 AM

By MARK STEVENSON

Associated Press Writer

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Archeologists digging through an Aztec temple say they've found a rare child sacrifice to the war god, a deity normally honored with the hearts or skulls of adult warriors.

The child found at Mexico City's Templo Mayor ruins was apparently killed sometime around 1450, in a sort of grim cornerstone ceremony intended to dedicate a new layer of building, according to archaeologist Ximena Chavez.

Priests propped the child - apparently already dead, since the sand around him showed no sign of movement - in a sitting position and workers packed earth around his body, which was then covered beneath a flight of stone temple steps.

Chavez said Friday there was no reference to child sacrifices to the war god Huitzilopochtli in accounts written by the Spaniards after the 1521 Conquest, showing the need for exhaustive digs to discover more about the long-controversial subject.

Some researchers say the Spaniards distorted or exaggerated accounts of human sacrifices by the Aztecs to justify their own brutal conquest; others defend the old accounts, but archeologists now say Mexico needs hard physical evidence to decide the truth.

``We are finding things here that writers of the earliest accounts did not mention, possibly because they were writing about things they didn't personally witness,'' said Chavez, of the National Institute of History and Anthropology.

``This child is unique,'' said Chavez, ``because it is the first child dedicated to Huitzilopochtli.'' Warriors captured during battles with opposing cities were often sacrificed to the war god; in contrast, children have sometimes been found sacrificed to Tlaloc, the rain god.

The discovery announced Friday was also unusual because the child's body was found whole, and accompanied by whistles, collars, ankle bracelets of shells and copper bells - details normally reserved for honorific burials.

Many sacrifice victims had body parts removed or were dumped willy-nilly into pits.

Researchers are still working to determine with certainty the sex, age and cause of death of the child whose skeletal remains were found in the test trench. But the careful placement of the child's body - and the ceremonial objects found with him - are strong indications that the child was sacrificed.

Carmen Pijoan, a prominent forensic anthropologist who did not participate in the dig, said that child sacrifices are sometimes found whole, but that it did appear unusual for a child to be sacrificed to the war god.

Chavez said the child's killing had to be understood in the context of Aztec beliefs.

``They say this action of (human) sacrifice as a life-giving activity,'' she said, noting they thought the deaths would bring rain, help crops and give life to the community.

In recent years archaeologists have found mounting physical evidence that corroborates the Spanish accounts of human sacrifices in substance, but which indicates that some Spanish accounts exaggerated the number of victims.

Merkwaardige gewoonte toch.

New Evidence of Sacrificed Inca Children
By Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News

May 27, 2005— Recent evidence sheds light on the young boys and girls who were killed during Inca sacrificial ceremonies in the 15th and 16th centuries, evidence that includes pottery and human remains found at South American mountaintop sites.

Although archaeologists do not believe the Inca practiced cannibalism, as did their Aztec neighbors to the north, the evidence does suggest that Inca leaders targeted children to serve as sacrificial "tribute," somewhat similar to money collected for state taxes.

"No such sacrifices occur today, to my knowledge, though Andean people make offerings to the mountains that 'watch over' their territory on a daily basis," said Tamara Bray, an associate professor of anthropology at Wayne State University.

Bray outlines the findings in a recent issue of the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology.

She told Discovery News that DNA analysis of human remains at sites in Argentina, Peru and Ecuador indicates young victims ranged in age from four to 10. The children generally were not related to one another.

Bray said the state would issue a levy for all provinces within the empire to tribute young children. Girls generally came from the ranks of the acllakuna, which means "chosen women."

"They (the Inca leaders) went through communities on a regular basis and took young girls away to live in the acllawasi (houses of the chosen women) and become essentially servants of the state," Bray explained.

Little is known about how boys were chosen, but Bray said some were the children of local lords. Of the collected pool of live "tribute," the Inca leaders then selected physically perfect, unblemished, virginal boys and girls for the mysterious capacocha ceremonies, which likely had religious, political and economic symbolic meanings.

Bray said particularly important ceremonies at major huacas, or shrines, involved the killing of both a boy and a girl, who were "buried at the site as if they were a married couple."

Historical writings indicate that the victims probably were drugged during the ceremonies and did not feel much pain, although killing methods were violent.

"The forensic evidence indicates that some were killed by strangulation, others by a blow with a blunt instrument to the head," she explained. "It's likely they would've been sedated prior to being killed through lots of chicha — corn beer — ingestion."

The children were interred with pottery tablewares and figurines representing people and objects.
Analysis of the ceramic vessels indicates that some of the victims likely were of a higher status than others, despite the fact that the material goods found with the boys and girls all appeared on the surface to be of equal value.

Bray and her team removed clay in the form of powder and then determined concentrations of elements within the clay through instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), which involved irradiating the ceramic residues at the Ford Nuclear Reactor and then analyzing the decay periods of isotopes, or certain atoms, found within the clay.

The scientists used this information to identify elements in the clay samples. This data, in turn, was matched to natural clay sources in South America.

Virtually all of the ceramic vessels studied were of quality workmanship and similar design, but the INAA tests revealed that only a handful of the sacrificed children were buried with pots made out of clay from the sacred sites of Lake Titicaca and the city of Cuzco, which served as the Inca capital.

The researchers were most surprised to find that the richest burial, in terms of the number of objects, at Mount Llullaillaco in northern Argentina, yielded goods made from lesser prized, local clays, which the scientists suggest indicates that the young girl found there was not of royal or otherwise prestigious blood.

John Verano, associate professor of anthropology at Tulane University who has studied a capacocha site in Arequipa, Peru, told Discovery News that the recent findings are "most interesting."

"The capacocha ritual is something that may seem very strange and difficult to understand outside of the context of Inca society and religion," he said. "The available ethnohistoric descriptions lack many details of this ritual, and often contradict one another in the details they provide. It thus remains an important task for archaeologists to try and reconstruct these events from the physical evidence the Inca left behind."
