paleolitische en neolithische vrouwenbeeldjes

Algemene onderwerpen over godsdienst en mythologie.
Vergelijking verschillende godsdiensten, mythen, rituelen enz.

Venus vom Galgenberg
Afbeelding
Venus vom Galgenberg, the oldest figurine of a woman and the oldest stone sculpture ever found, created around 30,000 B.C. Found on September 23, 1988 during the excavation of a habitation of palaeolithic hunters at Galgenberg near Stratzing (Lower Austria), broken into several pieces. 7.2 cm high figurine of a woman weighing 10 g and made of greenish, very shiny amphibolite slate, the upper body is turned to the side, in a dancing position, three-dimensional front, flat back, believed to have had cultic or religious significance. The stone material is from the immediate vicinity of where the figurine was found, and the waste material provides proof that the figurine was made in the same area. Exhibited in the Weinstadt museum in Krems an der Donau.

Syro-Hittite, 2000 - 1700 B.C.
Clay, 5 3/4 x 1 3/4 in. (14.8 x 4.6 cm).
Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Boone M. Bowen. 1968.226

The first form of sculpture in the Near East consisted of handmade clay figurines. Male figurines, depicting clothed individuals, were not very frequent, and the vast majority of figurines represented nude females.
These nude female representations in clay appear during the Neolithic period and in excavation levels dating from the third to first millennia B.C., when large numbers were produced in Mesopotamia and Iran alike, and especially in the kingdom of Elam.
Being handmade or mold-made, many were of a similar type and some of them must have been mass-produced.
These figurines were often fashioned with hands joined or supporting the breasts. Their navel was generally represented, and the pubic triangle was very well delineated.
They may have represented deities, like Ishtar as the goddess of sexual love, or worshipers.
While some of these figurines were probably meant for magic rituals, many of them may have been used as votive offerings related to fertility.
Fertility was an essential concept in the life of ancient societies, and all the different aspects of religion and culture were oriented towards promoting it.
For people depending on agriculture, survival was not only based on the fecundity of the human mother but also on the fruitfulness of the land.

Hoi Els,

"Dogu" Female Figurine and detail from "The Jomon Venus"

"The people of the middle and late Jomon period also used clay to fashion small human figures.
These figures were never fully realistic but rather were distorted into fascinating shapes.
Called 'dogu,' they tend to have large faces, small arms and hands, and compact bodies.
Some of the later dogu seem to be wearing round goggles over their eyes.
Others have heart-shaped faces.

:lach:

Fertility Goddess

Afbeelding

Cyprus, limestone, 3 000-2 500 B.C.
Height: 42,4 cm / Width: 27,7 cm

The Museum houses idols from the period 3900-2500 B.C., which strongly indicates the worship of the goddess of fertility.
According to the Greek tradition, this goddess may be the predecessor of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, born out of the sea surrounding Cyprus.

Statuette of a Female Figure

Afbeelding

Cycladic, Cyclades, 3000 - 2800 B.C.
Marble

Named for a cemetery on the island of Paros, the Plastiras type of Cycladic figure usually represented a standing woman with her hands meeting above the waist.
The Getty Museum's example is unusual in having no forearms.
Plastiras figures are strangely proportioned, with the neck and head often as much as one third of the figure's overall height.
The sculptor carefully carved this figure, separating the legs and indicating many anatomical details such as knee caps, collar bones, navel, and pelvic area.
The face was articulated with a mouth and holes bored for eyes, which were originally inlaid in a dark stone.
Carving each leg made the figures fragile, and many show signs of ancient repairs. The hole in the figure's right thigh was used to reattach her leg after it broke in antiquity.
The fact that the carving of the legs stops at the break rather than going up to the crotch, as was usual for this type, may imply that the figure broke during carving.
In modern times, her other leg snapped off at the same point and was glued back on, as was her head.
Modern re-carving has been detected on many areas of this figure.

Female Figure of the Precanonical Type

Afbeelding

Cycladic, Cyclades, 2800 - 2700 B.C.
Marble / Height: 11 1/4 in.

The Precanonical type of Cycladic figure implies a transitional phase in the development of this kind of sculpture, between the earlier standing Plastiras type with hands just meeting on the torso and the later reclining Kapsala and Spedos types with completely folded arms.
On this example, the figure is still standing and the arms are only partially folded. The sculptor was still quite interested in naturalistic details.
He sculpted the nose, arms, navel, and knees in relief but indicated the eyes, brows, and ears with only shallow lines

Female Figure of the Kapsala Type

Afbeelding

Perhaps by the Kontoleon Master
Cycladic, 2700 - 2600 B.C. Marble.

By around 2700 B.C., Cycladic sculptors had developed a form of carved figure that would become canonical: a reclining female with folded arms.
The Kapsala type, named after a cemetery on the island of Amorgos, was the earliest of these canonical types.
Kapsala figures tend to have slender and elongated proportions.
In an effort to avoid breakage, the legs of the figure are only partially separated; the feet of this figure have broken off.
Anatomical features such as arms are modeled three-dimensionally, whereas in later types, sculptors rendered this feature with incised lines.
The Getty Museum's piece is unusually large for a Kapsala figure.
