There is "only the difference in names between the festivals of Bacchus and those of Osiris, between the Mysteries of Isis and those of Demeter."

Diodorus Siculus

"Her form and characteristics were adapted to suit Greek requirements and the Greek imagination. Her form was not difficult to modify. The goddess, who even in the latest Egyptian temple images was depicted was wearing the ancient robe with shoulder-straps, and thus remote from current fashion, was for the Greek worshiper represented as clad in contemporary Egyptian costume. Her drapery was Greek, her Egyptian attributes (headgear) were reduced in size; and certain new characteristics were added (e.g., the cornucopia)....The cornucopia was the property of the almighty Tyche, from which she dispensed her gifts in arbitrary fashion; and it is Tyche who is now assigned to Isis. This symbolizes a very fundamental process: fate, which in the Greek world had emancipated itself fully from the power of the gods and had even posed a threat to their existence, is here placed under the guiding hand of Isis..."
Another characteristic that cannot be derived from the Egyptian Isis image is contained in the phrase: "'I am the lady of seafaring' - a clear and succinct confirmation of the archaeological evidence that Isis was related to navigation, which in former times was obviously not part of her sphere. This latter activity helped to make her an all encompassing deity..."

Siegfried Morenz, Egyptian Religion

Diodorus Siculus on Isis

27. The Egyptians also made a law, they say, contrary to the general custom of mankind, permitting men to marry their sisters, this being due to the success attained by Isis in this respect; for she had married her brother Osiris, and upon his death, having taken a vow never to marry another man, she both avenged the murder of her husband and reigned all her days over the land with complete respect for the laws, and, in a word, became the cause of more and greater blessings to all men than any other. It is for these reasons, in fact, that it was ordained that the queen should have greater power and honor than the king and that among private persons the wife should enjoy authority over her husband, the husbands agreeing in the marriage contract that they will be obedient in all things to their wives.

Hadrian, 117 - 138 AD
AE Drachm of Alexandria, Egypt

The bust of Isis on a tetradrachm of Julia Mamaea, the standing figure of Isis-Tyche on a tetradrachm of Pius, and Isis nursing Harpokrates, on a diobol of Hadrian, form the top line of Plate III. The latter coin is unpublished. These are followed by Isis seated (half-drachma of Hadrian), and Isis Pharia, patron goddess of sailors and waylarers, facing the Pharos lighthouse (drachma of Hadrain). The table is completed by two drachmas; on that of Trajan, Isis-Hathor stands between Horus (in hawk form) and an altar; while on that of Pius, Isis Euploia stands between Nilus and Euthenia, with prows of ships in the background.

Isis Pharia walking right, holding large sail, Pharos behind right. Regnal year across fields.

Vertaling?

Those which come to dream on l’île holy can contemplate, on the southernmost wall of the door d’Hadrien, a summary of the cycle osirien. Through l’ouverture which gives on the Nile, they imagine also the nacelle d’Isis carrying milk, guarantor of the renewed Life. This boat went down along the river jusqu’à Alexandria where, holding a marine anchor, sometimes exchanged with a sail inflated by the wind, it became Isis Pharia, owner of the navigators, venerated at side d’Isis-Lactans, the Virgin nursing. The soldiers brought back it to Europe by unexpected routes; one day, the nautes of Lutèce made of it their owner, always so benevolent, and its presence, sitting with the prow of the nave overcome by l’étoile Sothis, still appeared in last century on the weapons of the town of Paris.

In recent years, sub aqua divers have found evidence of a rock-cut temple. In 1963, a colossal stone statue of Isis, nearly 10 meters tall, was discovered underwater. This has to be associated with the temple of Isis Pharia, which stood close by the Pharos on the island itself.

Economic and cultural relations also existed between the coastal cities and Egypt. For long periods of time Egypt’s influence was prevalent in this area. The Tychai of Caesarea, Ashkelon, Akko and Anthedon were identified with Isis-Pelagia (maritime Isis) and were shown with a ship or a sail or with her son, Harpokrates (Fig. 1). Like Astarte, Isis fulfilled the needs of the inhabitants of the coast by incorporating the characteristics of motherhood, war, defense and seamanship.

ISIS & Stella Maris

Berichtdoor RoyJava » di 13 sep , 2005 14:19

Hallo Els,...

Terwijl Hermetische teksten (beschreven door O.A.

Wallis Budge), Venus (Ronnie Gale Dreyer) en Larousse (World Mythology)

Stella maris"betekend toch gewoon"ZEE-STER"?
