FROM THE COPPER AGE
4600-4200 BCE
In the days of the Mother Goddess
An excellent way of harnessing the protective powers of the Mother Goddess was to fashion her body out of clay, bone or stone, and wear it around one's neck or worship it in a sanctuary. This cult disappeared in the Bronze Age.
The vast majority of human-shaped idols found near Varna represent women. Artists did not give these figurines individual features, but merely emphasized their femininity, with a pubic triangle and rounded belly.
Many flat bone idols were found in graves.
